A man accused of killing a 5-month-old baby has been denied bail.

A 38-year-old North West man who allegedly killed his 5-month-old nephew while trying to attack his mother has been denied bail.

Lazarus Chaka Hambone appeared at the Leeudoringstad Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where his case was postponed to 17 January next year for further investigations.

North West National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the State had successfully opposed bail, "noting among other things that the accused is a parolee, on a murder case that occurred in 2011".

Allegations are that on Saturday 5 November, Hambone was arguing with his 16-year-old niece, who had her 5-month-old baby boy on her back.

Hambone allegedly then left the home in Kgakala Township's Extension 4, Leeudoringstad, and came back inside with a spade, with which he tried to assault his niece.

However, he ended up hitting the baby instead.

"The baby was taken to a local clinic where he was transported to Wolmaransstad Hospital and ultimately transferred to Tshepong Hospital, where he died due to head injuries," said Mamothame.
