The Hawks arrested a police captain on Tuesday after he allegedly demanded a bribe from someone who reportedly committed tax-related fraud.

"The Hawks promptly acted on information about a commissioned officer stationed at Krugersdorp allegedly demanding money in exchange for not arresting a person who reportedly committed tax-related fraud," Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Philani Nkwalase said.

The investigation took Hawks officers to Fordsburg, in Johannesburg, where the police captain allegedly collected the money and fled the scene.

"The suspect was chased and arrested along Albertina Sisulu Street in Fordsburg. He will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday," Nkwalase said.

Provincial Hawks head, Major General Ebrahim Kadwa, applauded the team for their swift response.

"We are sending a stern warning to corrupt officials, criminal activities within our ranks cannot be tolerated," he said.
